You Can Make a Difference
Literacy Volunteers of Laredo has already helped hundreds of non-reading adults, but there are many more that can be reached with your help. Become a Partner in Literacy by supporting the program with your volunteering of time or donations.
Ways You Can Help As A Partner of Literacy
Donations. As a non-profit organization, Literacy Volunteers of Laredo operates through individual donations, private grants, along with limited public funding. A donation of $30 or about 50 cents a week can buy materials a student needs for a year. Donations of $50 to 200 can expand the tutor training capabilities of the organization. But any & all donations are welcomed from our Partners in Literacy.
Volunteers. Volunteer tutors are the hearts of our programs, because tutors work directly with adult students. You need no special professional experience to become a literacy tutor, just a willingness to commit your time. Three hours a week of your time can give a non-reader a new chance at self-sufficiency.
The Literacy Volunteers of Laredo also needs volunteers in many other areas. Your special talents and experience can help make a difference through program support, committee work, fund-raising and more.
Tutoring Sites. Since each tutor student pair or small group needs a place to meet at least twice a week, we always need new spaces for tutoring. If you have or know of facilities that can provide evening or weekend access with a table and a quiet place to work, please let us know.
In-Kind Donations. As we reach out and serve more people, our needs for operating support increase. In-kind donations of services, supplies or equipment can help sustain the literacy effort in Literacy Volunteers of Laredo. Such donations may include student materials, space for an annual tutor recognition event, and many others.
Student Recruitment. While many non-reading adults have been encouraged to enroll in Literacy Volunteers of Laredo programs, many more illiterate adults have yet to be reached. If you belong to a group or business that would like to help reach and teach non-reading adults in your business, group or neighborhood, please contact us. You can make a difference by spreading awareness among the people you work with or know best.
Sponsoring Grants. If you, your business, or other organization is interested in providing tax-deductible funding for all or part of a Literacy Volunteers of Laredo program or special project, please let us contact you.
