 Be a Tutor

If you have a couple of hours to spare each day, are unemployed, retired or a graduating student, the best place to work as a volunteer is Literacy Volunteers of Laredo. A graduating student’s resume will truly look interesting if it includes LVL as one or your pastimes when applying for a job. Literacy Volunteers of Laredo is one of the most progressive non-profit organizations in the community whose mission is to help people overcome the burden of illiteracy.

If you know of someone who needs to learn English or if you are willing to make a difference in someone’s life, join our energetic team.

Tutor Training

Literacy Volunteers of Laredo’s Tutor Training session is successful, significant, and necessary in many aspects. Tutor Training, not only reaffirms the mission statement and reestablishes bonds among LVL board members, volunteers, and students, but also and more importantly, it reaches and teaches other individuals, to spread literacy along with our mission statement to all people in our community, and certainly, all people in the world, who have the desire and need to read, write, and speak the English language. Literacy is the master key to communication in our community and our world.

The 8-hour Adult Basic Reading and ESL Workshops use instruction by tapes and slides, plus live demonstrations and practice teaching. The Basic Reading Workshop is also available on video.

The Basic Reading Workshop includes instruction in language experience, sight words, and how to apply all of these. Tutor trainees learn how to assess student’s needs and goals, plan lessons and provide motivation.

The ESL Workshop

The ESL workshop includes segments on intercultural communication, orientation and testing, listening comprehension, non-verbal communication, survival skills, plans, citizenship and other cultures.

Advanced and specialized training is provided to LVL tutors through a variety of in-service LVL workshops.

The Literacy Volunteers of Laredo engages in public awareness programs and recruits and trains volunteer speakers who support our work and volunteer their time to community groups and agencies that want to know more about literacy.
